A transportation management system (TMS) is an element of supply chain management that is positioned between a company’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and its shipping process. The system ensures that a company’s resources are invested in the best transportation process for its freight, one that offers the best combination of freight care, delivery time, and delivery cost. Supporting the system’s management function is a logistics resource. More and more companies have started using logistic management system and hence the demand and competition have increased considerably. So the number of companies providing customized transportation management system or freight management systems has increased.
When you control the freight transaction, it can benefit two ways by either earning money or saving money on the selecting of and payment for the transportation. By doing transportation rate negotiations, you may get the best deal on freight on your own, with your own negotiating power and the expertise of your freight broker. The company that provides the Transportation service can also be a valuable partner in gathering all the tedious load information that is prerequisite to finding the right carrier, with the right trailer, at the lowest possible price for you as the buyer.
Besides that, most shippers prefer to have logistics performed in-house. Traditionally, this requires hiring experts to do warehouse design. Something that is common among large, high volume shippers that have a transportation fleet, but not among small to medium size shippers that don’t have a fleet. For these shippers, the traditional alternative to hiring experts is contracting with a 3PL provider – an arrangement whose value depended on the practices of the 3PL provider. The shipment load planning and routing optimization helps the shippers to plan the loading and then find suitable and optimized routes as per their requirements. This helps to save a lot of money and time and as results makes it easy for the shippers to manage.
